One Stop Guide to Cromer Norfolk

Cromer Norfolk: Located on the north coast of Norfolk in East Anglia, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has been a popular holiday destination since the 19th century. Also well known as a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters which have been a major source of income for its fishermen for many centuries. Cromer today has a population of just under 8,000 and its motto is “Gem of the Norfolk Coast”.

Cromer History: The name Cromer was not listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, though there were certainly Anglo Saxon settlements in the area, it is probable that the village listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, as it stood where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. Another settlement listed in the Domesday Book as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now completely covered by the sea, about 400 metres from Cromer Pier.

Cromer has survived over the centuries mostly through the activity of its fishermen, an industry which thrived up until the 1060’s when fish stocks went into decline. Apart from lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the town’s fishermen were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The often dangerous sea conditions off the coast of Norfolk, led to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were mostly manned by local fishermen. During the 1920’s, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed craft.

Tourism began in Cromer in the early 19th century, and the town was renowned for its pure air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived in Cromer in 1877, bringing increasing numbers of visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. A second station to the East Midlands opened about 10 years later.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul originally dates from the 14th century, though it was rebuilt in the 19th century and now has the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
