The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Discovered on the northern coastline of Norfolk county in East of England, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has for many years been a favourite vacation destination. Additionally reputable as a fishing town, Cromer is world famous for its lobsters and crabs, providing an essential income source for its local fishermen through the generations.

The town at this time has a populace of just under eight thousand occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not recognized in the 1086 Domesday Book, even if there certainly would have been Saxon communites around the area, it is certainly likely that the community recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, because it sat where the St Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. Another settlement documented in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely under the sea, around 400m north-east of Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself at one time sat from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was little by little demolished by the sea during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived financially throughout the years mostly through the activity of its fishermen, an industry that thrived up to the 60's as fish stocks went into decline. Aside from the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishing fleet had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The generally life-threatening sea conditions off Norfolk's coastline, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were usually operated by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously rowed craft.

The holiday business started off in the town early in the nineteenth century, and it was celebrated for the clean air and health giving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived in Cromer in the 1870s, driving increasing amounts of travellers to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An alternate rail station connecting it to the East Midlands was opened roughly ten years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul originally dates from the 14th Cent, and it was reconstructed during the 19th century and currently boasts the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 foot).
