The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Found on the northern coastline of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has for many decades been a favourite holiday destination. Also well known as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a leading source of income for its local fishermen through the generations.

Cromer at present has a population of just below eight thousand inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is odd that the name "Cromer" wasn't identified in the 1086 Domesday Book, though it is not disputed that there were Saxon settlements in the neighborhood, it is very likely that the community documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, as it was situated where the parish church now lies. A second village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today completely covered by the sea, about four hundred meters from the pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time was situated some way inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was slowly wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

The town has managed economically across the ages mostly through the talent of its fishermen, an industry that prospered until the nineteen sixties when fish numbers diminished. In addition to the lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town had been engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The commonly hazardous sea conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, led to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were typically crewed by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to replace rowed craft.

Tourism started in the town in the early 1800s, and it was celebrated for its clean air and restorative sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later changed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived in Cromer in 1877, carrying more and more visitors to the area and establishing it as a holiday destination. An additional rail station joining it to the East Midlands was opened around ten years after this.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church was first built in the 14th Cent, though it was rebuilt during the 19th century and currently has the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 feet).
