The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Sitting on the northern coast of Norfolk in East Anglia, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has been a celebrated holiday destination ever since the 1800s. The town currently has a populace of around seven thousand seven hundred residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: The name "Cromer" was not documented in the 1086 Domesday Book, though it is clear that there were Anglo Saxon communites in the area, it is probable that the community recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, since it stood where the parish church now lies. A further settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been totally covered by the sea, around 400m to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer once upon a time stood some distance from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was over time destroyed by the sea in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

The town has survived financially through the generations mainly due to the activities of its fishermen, a business which prospered until the 1960's when fish numbers went into decline. Apart from the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The routinely hazardous conditions off Norfolk's coastline, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were for the most part manned by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, enabling powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism started in Cromer in the early 1800s, and the town was renowned for the pure air and healthy sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived at the town in 1877, drawing more and more visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. An additional train station to the East Midlands opened up roughly ten years after this.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the 14th C, and it was rebuilt during the Nineteenth century and at this time boasts the tallest church tower in the county (160 feet).
