The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is weird that the name "Cromer" wasn't quoted in the Domesday Book of 1086, though it is a fact that there were Anglo Saxon settlements around the area, it is conceivable that the village listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, because it sat where the parish church now stands. Another settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been totally under the sea, approximately 400 metres to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself at one time stood some distance inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was gradually demolished by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has sustained across the ages largely by the skill of its fishing fleet, a business which did well up until the 1960's as the numbers of fish went into decline. Apart from the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen had been occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The frequently severe conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were predominantly manned by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, which allowed powered lifeboats to replace man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism commenced in Cromer in the first half of the 19th century, and it was famed for the clean air and healthy bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at Cromer in 1877, driving growing numbers of people to the area and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An extra station connecting it to the East Midlands was opened about a decade after this.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th Cent, though it was rebuilt during the 19th century and today has got the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
