The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Located on the north coastline of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has been a well loved vacation destination since the 1800s. Equally known as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, providing an important source of income for its fishermen over the generations.

The town presently has a populace of roughly 8,000 residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not recognized in the Domesday Book of 1086, even though there certainly would have been Saxon settlements in the region, it is very likely that the community recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, as it was located where the parish church now stands. Yet another village detailed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today entirely covered by the sea, around 400m from the pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time sat inland, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was eventually wiped out by the sea during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has sustained throughout the generations predominantly due to the prowess of its fishermen, a business that did well up until the 1960's at which time the numbers of fish decreased. In addition to the lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The generally treacherous sea conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were most commonly manned by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, enabling lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously man-powered craft.

The tourist business started out in the town in the first half of the nineteenth century, and it was renowned for the pure air and health improving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was transformed into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived at Cromer in 1877, drawing an increasing number of people to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An alternate station to the East Midlands opened up about ten years after this.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the 14th century, although was reconstructed in the 19thC and today boasts the highest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
