The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Sitting on the north coastline of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has for many years been a popular holiday spot. Also recognized as being a fishing town, Cromer is notable for its crabs and lobsters, providing an essential income for the local fishermen through the generations.

The town at this time has a populace of just under 8,000 inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not quoted in the Domesday Book of 1086, however it is not disputed that there were Saxon townships in the neighborhood, it is probable that the settlement mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, since it was situated where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. Another village posted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been completely swallowed by the ocean, approximately four hundred metres north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time was positioned from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was little by little demolished by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

Cromer has managed over the years principally through the prowess of its fishing fleet, a business that thrived up until the nineteen sixties at which time fish numbers went into decline. Besides the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town were being occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The regularly dangerous conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were predominantly manned by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to replace man-powered boats.

The tourism business developed in the town in the early 19th century, and the town was celebrated for the pure air and health giving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway came to the town in the 1870s, bringing a growing amount of travellers to the area and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An extra station to the East Midlands was unveiled about 10 years later.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church first dates from the 14th century, although was rebuilt during the Nineteenth century and at present has got the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
