The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Set on the northern coast of Norfolk in East Anglia, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has been a favourite vacation location ever since the nineteenth century. Furthermore renowned as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a major source of income for its local fishermen since early days.

Cromer nowadays has a populace of just below eight thousand occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't quoted in the Domesday Book (1086), though it is evident that there were Anglo Saxon communites around the area, it is quite possible that the community registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, since it sat where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now lies. A different village recognized in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been entirely covered by the sea, roughly four hundred meters to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time stood some way inland, but the town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was gradually wiped out by the sea during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived economically across the decades largely due to the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry that thrived up until the nineteen sixties at which time fish numbers declined. In addition to lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet had been occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The often risky conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were routinely crewed by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism began in the town early in the 1800s, and the town was celebrated for its pure air and health giving bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to the town in the 1870s, delivering increasing amounts of tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. The second station connecting it to the East Midlands opened up approximately a decade after this.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church first dates from the 14th century, and it was rebuilt during the 1800s and now boasts the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
