The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Sitting on the north coastline of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has been a favorite holiday hotspot since the 19th century. Also renowned as being a fishing town, Cromer is notable for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a leading income for its fishermen since early days.

The town at this time has a populace of just under 8,000 inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't recognized in the 1086 Domesday Book, however it is indisputable that there were Anglo Saxon settlements in the region, it is likely that the settlement identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, as it was positioned where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now stands. Yet another village outlined in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been totally covered by the sea, about 400m north-east of the pier.

Cromer originally was positioned inland, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was eventually destroyed by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived across the decades principally through the activity of its fishermen, a business which did well until the nineteen sixties at which time the numbers of fish declined. In addition to the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishing fleet were occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The routinely treacherous sea conditions off Norfolk's coastline, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were almost entirely crewed by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered vessels.

The tourism business commenced in Cromer in the early 1800s, and the town was famed for its clean air and health giving sea bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line came to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, drawing more and more travellers to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. A second station connecting it to the East Midlands was unveiled about ten years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th Cent, and it was rebuilt during the Nineteenth century and today has the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
