The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086), however it is recognized that there were Anglo Saxon communes in the neighborhood, it is possible that the settlement documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, as it sat where the parish church now lies. A different settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now entirely swallowed by the ocean, about 400m to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer at one time was positioned inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was progressively wiped out by the ocean in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has managed over the decades principally through the competence of its fishing fleet, an industry that thrived until the nineteen sixties at which time fish stocks declined. Apart from lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen had been engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The quite often life-threatening sea conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were by and large manned by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed lifeboats.

Tourism started in Cromer early in the 1800s, and it was famous for its pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived at the town in 1877, delivering lots more tourists to the area and establishing it as a holiday destination. An additional station connecting it to the East Midlands opened roughly ten years after this.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church was first built in the 14th Cent, though it was remodelled during the Nineteenth century and currently has the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 foot).
