The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Lying on the northern coast of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has for many generations been a favoured holiday spot. Likewise known as a fishing town, Cromer is celebrated for its lobsters and crabs, providing an important source of income for the fishermen throughout the centuries.

The town these days has a population of just under 8,000 occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The History of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't documented in the 1086 Domesday Book, although it is acknowledged that there were Saxon communites around the area, it is most likely that the settlement mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, as it was situated where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. Another village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been entirely under the sea, roughly 400m from Cromer Pier.

Cromer once upon a time was positioned from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was slowly wiped out by the ocean in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has endured economically throughout the decades by and large through the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry that flourished up to the 1960's at which time the numbers of fish decreased. Apart from lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The oftentimes severe sea conditions off the coast of Norfolk, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were typically manned by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to take over from rowed craft.

The tourist industry started out in the town early in the 19th century, and the town was celebrated for the pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway was connected to the town in the 1870s, delivering an increasing number of visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. Another rail station connecting it to the East Midlands was opened around a decade later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul has its origin in the 14th C, although it was rebuilt during the 19thC and at the moment boasts the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 feet).
