The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Located on the northern coast of Norfolk county in East of England, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has for many decades been a favorite holiday destination. Furthermore renowned as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a leading income for the fishermen for many hundreds of years.

The town at present has a population of about 7,700 residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not noted in the 1086 Domesday Book, however there were certainly Anglo Saxon communes around the area, it is most likely that the village listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, considering that it stood where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now lies. An additional settlement detailed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely swallowed by the ocean, around 400m north-east of Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time sat inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was progressively destroyed by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

The town has survived throughout the generations by and large due to the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry that did well up to the nineteen sixties as stocks of fish decreased. Aside from lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen were being occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The regularly dangerous conditions off Norfolk's coast, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were routinely manned by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed lifeboats.

The holiday industry began in Cromer in the first half of the 19th century, and it was celebrated for the clean air and health giving sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived in Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, carrying more and more people to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. Another train station to the East Midlands opened up approximately ten years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul has its origin in the fourteenth century, although was rebuilt in the 19th century and now has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
