Cromer in Norfolk: Lying on the north coastline of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has long been a favorite holiday spot. Equally reputable as a fishing town, Cromer is notable for its lobsters and crabs, providing a significant income for its fishermen for many generations.

Cromer these days has a population of roughly 8,000 residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not identified in the 1086 Domesday Book, although it is not disputed that there were Saxon encampments around the area, it is feasible that the settlement mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, because it stood where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A different village shown in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days totally swallowed by the sea, around 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself originally sat some distance from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was little by little wiped out by the ocean during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived financially over the ages primarily through the talent of its fishermen, an industry that flourished up until the 1960's at which time the numbers of fish declined. As well as the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town had been engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The often risky sea conditions off Norfolk's coastline, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were commonly crewed by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, enabling powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed boats.

Tourism commenced in Cromer in the early nineteenth century, and it was recognized for its pure air and health giving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was changed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived in the town in the 1870s, carrying more and more travellers to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. An additional train station to the East Midlands opened approximately ten years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul first dates from the fourteenth century, and it was reconstructed during the 1800s and at this time has the highest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
