Cromer in Norfolk: Discovered on the north coastline of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has been a favorite vacation hotspot since the nineteenth century. Likewise famous as being a fishing town, Cromer is renowned for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a major income source for the fishermen for many hundreds of years.

The town today has a population of about seven thousand seven hundred residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not identified in the 1086 Domesday Book, even though there were certainly Saxon settlements around the area, it is quite possible that the community identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, because it was located where the parish church now stands. A different village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now completely swallowed by the sea, roughly four hundred meters to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself long ago was positioned inland, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was over time destroyed by the ocean in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

The town has managed economically throughout the years mostly by the expertise of its fishing fleet, an industry that thrived up until the 1960's at which time the numbers of fish declined. Aside from lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were being occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The oftentimes perilous sea conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were mainly manned by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, which allowed powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed lifeboats.

The tourist business started in the town in the first half of the 19th century, and the town was famed for its clean air and health improving bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system was connected to the town in eighteen seventy seven, delivering lots more visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. Another train station joining it to the East Midlands opened up approximately 10 years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul originates from the 14th C, though it was remodelled in the 19thC and now has got the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
