Cromer Norfolk: Sitting on the northern coast of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has been a well loved vacation spot ever since the nineteenth century. In addition recognized as a fishing town, Cromer is renowned for its crabs and lobsters, which have been an essential source of income for the local fishermen for many hundreds of years.

Cromer presently has a population of roughly seven thousand seven hundred residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is odd that the name "Cromer" wasn't listed in the 1086 Domesday Book, despite the fact that there were certainly Anglo Saxon settlements in the area, it is possible that the village documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, as it was placed where the parish church now stands. Yet another settlement listed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today completely covered by the sea, approximately 400m to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer originally sat some way inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was over time eradicated by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has managed economically over the ages for the most part by the activity of its fishermen, a business which thrived up until the 60's at which time stocks of fish went into decline. Apart from lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet had been occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically dangerous conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were often operated by local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to take over from rowed craft.

The holiday industry developed in the town early in the 1800s, and it was celebrated for the pure air and health giving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later turned into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1877, delivering more and more people to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. An additional station to the East Midlands was opened around a decade later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul has its origin in the fourteenth century, although it was reconstructed during the 19th century and today has the highest church tower in the county (160 foot).
