Cromer Norfolk: Situated on the northern coastline of Norfolk county in East of England, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has for many generations been a fashionable holiday spot. In addition famous as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a vital income source for its local fishermen over the centuries.

The town nowadays has a population of around 8,000 residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: The name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, even though it is not disputed that there were Saxon communes in the neighborhood, it is most likely that the village mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, since it was located where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now lies. A different village registered in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been totally under the sea, approximately four hundred metres from Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself originally sat some way inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was steadily wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained economically across the decades principally by the skill of its fishing fleet, a business that prospered until the 1960's as fish stocks went into decline. In addition to lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen were being occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The all too often unsafe sea conditions off the coast of Norfolk, led to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were in most cases operated by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to take over from rowed boats.

Tourism began in Cromer early in the 19th century, and the town was celebrated for its clean air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, driving a growing quantity of travellers to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. A second station to the East Midlands opened approximately a decade after this.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul originates from the 14th century, although was rebuilt during the 1800s and today has got the highest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
