The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Located on the north coast of Norfolk in East Anglia, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has for many years been a popular vacation destination. Furthermore well known as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, providing a leading income source for the fishermen for many hundreds of years.

The town at present has a population of around eight thousand inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer History: The name "Cromer" was not recognized in the 1086 Domesday Book, though it is not disputed that there were Saxon communites in the neighborhood, it is probable that the village documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, since it sat where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now stands. One additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now completely under the sea, roughly four hundred meters from Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time was situated some distance from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually over time eradicated by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived financially across the generations primarily through the expertise of its fishermen, a business which flourished until the 60's as stocks of fish declined. Apart from the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The generally severe sea conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were by and large manned by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, which permitted lifeboats powered by motor to take over from rowed vessels.

Tourism started off in the town in the first half of the 19th century, and the town was celebrated for the clean air and beneficial bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived in Cromer in the 1870s, carrying increasing amounts of tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. Another station to the East Midlands was unveiled around 10 years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul originates from the 14th Cent, although was remodelled in the Nineteenth century and now boasts the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 foot).
