The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer History: The name "Cromer" was not noted in the Domesday Book (1086), even though it is accepted that there were Saxon communes in the region, it is feasible that the settlement recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, as it was placed where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A second village recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been completely swallowed by the ocean, roughly 400m north-east of Cromer's pier.

Cromer long ago stood some way inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was steadily destroyed by the ocean during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has managed financially over the ages mostly due to the skill of its fishing fleet, a business that prospered up until the 1960's at which time fish stocks went into decline. Aside from lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the local fishermen were occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The generally risky conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, led to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were essentially operated by the local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing powered lifeboats to take over from rowed lifeboats.

Tourism commenced in the town early in the 1800s, and the town was celebrated for the pure air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, carrying lots more visitors to the area and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. A second train station to the East Midlands opened around 10 years later.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the 14th Cent, though it was reconstructed during the Nineteenth century and at present boasts the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
