The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book, however there were certainly Saxon encampments in the neighborhood, it is likely that the village noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, because it was situated where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now stands. One additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been totally under the sea, approximately 400m from Cromer Pier.

Cromer originally was positioned inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was progressively destroyed by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained through the centuries by and large due to the activity of its fishing fleet, a business that did well up to the nineteen sixties when stocks of fish dropped. Aside from the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town were occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The regularly treacherous sea conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were predominantly manned by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing powered lifeboats to take over from previously man-powered boats.

Tourism started out in Cromer in the early nineteenth century, and the town was famous for its clean air and health giving bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, drawing growing amounts of tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An extra railway station to the East Midlands opened up about 10 years after this.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th Cent, though it was reconstructed in the 19th century and at this time has got the tallest church tower in the county (160 foot).
