The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is weird that the name "Cromer" was not identified in the Domesday Book of 1086, nonetheless there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon communites around the area, it is certainly likely that the settlement recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, since it was located where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now stands. Yet another village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now totally swallowed by the ocean, about 400m north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time stood some way from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was slowly demolished by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

The town has survived over the years primarily by the prowess of its fishermen, a business which flourished up to the 1960's as fish numbers declined. As well as the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen were being engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The frequently treacherous conditions off the coast of Norfolk, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were commonly manned by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, permitting powered lifeboats to replace man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism started in the town in the early 1800s, and it was famous for the clean air and health giving sea bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen seventy seven, delivering more and more people to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An alternate station to the East Midlands opened up around 10 years after this.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th Cent, and it was rebuilt in the Nineteenth century and at this time boasts the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
