The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is strange that the name "Cromer" wasn't recorded in the Domesday Book (1086), nonetheless it is certain that there were Anglo Saxon settlements in the region, it is most likely that the village documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, as it stood where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. Yet another settlement listed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been totally under the sea, approximately 400m from the pier.

Cromer itself long ago was positioned some distance from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was little by little eradicated by the sea during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived economically over the ages mostly through the activity of its fishing fleet, a business which thrived until the 1960's at which time stocks of fish declined. As well as lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen were being occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The generally treacherous conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were mostly crewed by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously man-powered boats.

The tourist business began in the town in the first half of the 1800s, and the town was famed for its pure air and health improving bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system found its way to the town in eighteen seventy seven, drawing lots more tourists to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. A second railway station connecting it to the East Midlands opened up about ten years after this.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church has its origin in the fourteenth century, and it was rebuilt during the 1800s and today has the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 feet).
