The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book, even though it is not disputed that there were Saxon communes in the area, it is plausible that the community recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, considering that it stood where the St Peter and Saint Paul parish church now stands. A second settlement recognized in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been completely swallowed by the ocean, about four hundred metres to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer itself long ago sat some way from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was progressively demolished by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has managed economically across the ages mainly due to the activities of its fishing fleet, a business which thrived up to the 1960's as stocks of fish declined. As well as the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were being kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The regularly dangerous sea conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were in most cases crewed by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, allowing powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered vessels.

Tourism started in the town in the early nineteenth century, and it was renowned for the clean air and healthy bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to the town in the 1870s, drawing growing numbers of travellers to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A 2nd station to the East Midlands opened up about a decade after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul originates from the 14th C, though it was reconstructed in the 1800s and at the moment boasts the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 feet).
