The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Located on the northern coastline of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has been a celebrated holiday location since the 19th century. Equally well known as being a fishing town, Cromer is world famous for its lobsters and crabs, that have been an essential income source for the local fishermen since early times.

Cromer nowadays has a population of just below 8,000 occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is weird that the name "Cromer" wasn't identified in the 1086 Domesday Book, even if it is clear that there were Saxon encampments in the region, it is quite possible that the settlement mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, as it sat where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now lies. Yet another village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been totally swallowed by the ocean, around four hundred metres from the pier.

Cromer itself long ago stood some distance inland, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was eventually demolished by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived economically across the centuries largely by the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry that prospered up until the 1960's at which time stocks of fish declined. Besides the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were being occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The frequently risky sea conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were most commonly manned by the local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered boats.

The holiday industry developed in Cromer in the early 19th century, and the town was famed for its clean air and beneficial bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to the town in eighteen seventy seven, bringing increasing numbers of tourists to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. The second station to the East Midlands was opened roughly ten years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul originally dates from the 14th C, although it was reconstructed during the Nineteenth century and now boasts the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 feet).
