The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: It is strange that the name "Cromer" was not recognized in the 1086 Domesday Book, nonetheless there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon communes in the region, it is probable that the village mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, as it was located where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. Another village documented in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been entirely swallowed by the sea, approximately 400m to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer itself originally sat inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was over time demolished by the ocean during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

Cromer has managed over the decades mostly by the activity of its fishing fleet, an industry which thrived up until the nineteen sixties at which time fish stocks dropped. In addition to the the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishing fleet were occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The oftentimes severe conditions off Norfolk's coastline, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were frequently manned by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered craft.

The holiday industry started out in Cromer in the first half of the 1800s, and it was recognized for the pure air and health enhancing sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway came to Cromer in the 1870s, carrying increasing amounts of travellers to the area and establishing it as a holiday destination. A second station to the East Midlands opened up approximately 10 years after this.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church first dates from the 14th C, although it was rebuilt in the Nineteenth century and today has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 foot).
