Cromer in Norfolk: Standing on the northern coast of Norfolk county in Eastern England, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has been a favourite vacation spot ever since the 19th century. In addition recognized as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a substantial source of income for its local fishermen through the centuries.

Cromer presently has a populace of just below 8,000 inhabitants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't recognized in the Domesday Book of 1086, however it is certain that there were Anglo Saxon settlements around the area, it is probable that the settlement noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, as it was positioned where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now lies. Yet another village registered in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been entirely covered by the sea, approximately 400 meters from Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time was positioned some distance from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was eventually eradicated by the ocean during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived economically through the years largely by the prowess of its fishing fleet, a business that thrived up until the 1960's when stocks of fish dropped. Apart from lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The frequently risky conditions off Norfolk's coast, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were almost entirely manned by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, which allowed lifeboats powered by motor to take over from rowed vessels.

The tourism industry started off in the town early in the 19th century, and the town was recognized for its pure air and beneficial bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later remodelled as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived at Cromer in 1877, driving increasing numbers of visitors to the town and establishing it as a holiday destination. A second station to the East Midlands was opened roughly ten years later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the 14th Cent, but was remodelled during the 19thC and today has the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 feet).
