Cromer in Norfolk: Standing on the north coast of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has for many decades been a favourite vacation spot. Also recognized as a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a vital source of income for its local fishermen throughout the ages.

Cromer currently has a population of around eight thousand residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is weird that the name "Cromer" was not recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book, though it is accepted that there were Anglo Saxon communites in the area, it is plausible that the settlement listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, as it sat where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now stands. A further village shown in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been entirely under the sea, roughly four hundred meters from Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time sat inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was steadily demolished by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has sustained economically over the centuries mostly through the activity of its fishermen, an industry that flourished until the 60's as fish stocks declined. Besides lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were being occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The oftentimes hazardous conditions off Norfolk's coast, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were mostly operated by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, allowing motor powered lifeboats to take over from rowed vessels.

The holiday business started in the town in the early nineteenth century, and it was renowned for the clean air and health enhancing bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived in the town in 1877, bringing more and more people to the area and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An additional train station connecting it to the East Midlands opened approximately a decade later.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the 14th C, and it was remodelled during the 1800s and now boasts the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
