The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Situated on the northern coast of the county of Norfolk in East Anglia, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has for many decades been a favourite vacation destination. Furthermore well known as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, which have been an essential source of income for its fishermen for many generations.

Cromer at present has a populace of around 8,000 inhabitants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historical Past: The name "Cromer" was not documented in the 1086 Domesday Book, although there were certainly Saxon communes around the area, it is very likely that the community listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, as it was placed where the parish church now lies. Yet another settlement posted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been completely under the sea, around 400m north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time was situated some way inland, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was steadily eradicated by the sea in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived financially throughout the years principally through the skill of its fishing fleet, a business which did well up to the 60's at which time stocks of fish declined. Apart from the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishing fleet had been occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The regularly severe sea conditions off the coast of Norfolk, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were usually operated by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously rowed lifeboats.

Tourism started out in Cromer in the first half of the 1800s, and it was celebrated for the pure air and healthy bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system found its way to the town in the 1870s, bringing more and more people to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A 2nd railway station to the East Midlands was unveiled roughly ten years later.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul has its origin in the 14th century, though it was rebuilt in the 19th century and today has the tallest church tower in the county (160 foot).
