The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" wasn't mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, though it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon settlements around the area, it is possible that the village recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, because it stood where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now stands. A second village listed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now entirely covered by the sea, around 400 metres north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself at one time sat some way inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was progressively wiped out by the ocean in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has managed economically through the centuries primarily due to the activities of its fishermen, a business that did well up to the 60's as stocks of fish declined. Apart from the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The oftentimes perilous sea conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were typically manned by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to replace rowed craft.

The tourist business began in the town in the early nineteenth century, and it was acknowledged for the pure air and restorative sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at Cromer in the 1870s, carrying more and more visitors to the town and establishing it as a holiday destination. An additional railway station to the East Midlands opened up about a decade later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul was first built in the 14th C, although it was rebuilt during the 19thC and now boasts the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
