Cromer in Norfolk: Discovered on the northern coastline of Norfolk county in East of England, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a well known vacation hotspot ever since the nineteenth century. Also respected as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, that have been an essential source of income for its fishermen for many hundreds of years.

The town at present has a populace of roughly eight thousand occupants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is odd that the name "Cromer" was not recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, though it is not disputed that there were Saxon encampments in the area, it is plausible that the community documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, considering that it stood where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now stands. A different village noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been entirely under the sea, approximately 400m from the pier.

Cromer originally was positioned some distance from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time eradicated by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived through the decades predominantly due to the expertise of its fishermen, a business which thrived until the 1960's as stocks of fish declined. Aside from lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The quite often life-threatening conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were largely crewed by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered boats.

The tourism business commenced in the town in the first half of the 19th century, and the town was celebrated for its clean air and health improving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1877, carrying increasing amounts of travellers to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An additional station joining it to the East Midlands was opened approximately 10 years later.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul has its origin in the 14th Cent, though it was remodelled during the 19thC and today has the highest church tower in the county (160 feet).
