The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" wasn't listed in the Domesday Book (1086), nonetheless it is certain that there were Saxon communes in the region, it is plausible that the community recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, because it was placed where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now stands. One additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been totally under the sea, roughly 400 metres to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer once upon a time was positioned inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was steadily wiped out by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived over the ages largely due to the skill of its fishing fleet, an industry which thrived up to the nineteen sixties when fish stocks decreased. In addition to the the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town were occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The commonly dangerous sea conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were almost entirely crewed by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to take over from rowed vessels.

Tourism began in the town in the first half of the 19th century, and the town was renowned for the pure air and health giving bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later changed into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The train was connected to Cromer in 1877, driving lots more people to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. An alternate rail station connecting it to the East Midlands was unveiled around a decade later.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul has its origin in the 14th Cent, though it was reconstructed during the 19thC and now boasts the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
