The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is notable that the name "Cromer" wasn't registered in the 1086 Domesday Book, though there certainly would have been Saxon communites in the region, it is plausible that the settlement listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, since it sat where the St Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. A further village recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been completely covered by the sea, about 400m from the pier.

Cromer once upon a time stood some way inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was little by little eradicated by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

Cromer has managed throughout the decades by and large by the competence of its fishing fleet, a business which flourished up until the 1960's as fish stocks went into decline. Besides lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the local fishermen had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The oftentimes perilous conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were mostly crewed by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, which permitted motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed craft.

The tourist business started out in Cromer in the first half of the 19th century, and it was acknowledged for the pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen seventy seven, delivering more and more visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An additional train station to the East Midlands opened about a decade after this.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul originally dates from the 14th C, but was remodelled in the 19thC and today has the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
