Cromer Norfolk: Located on the northern coastline of the county of Norfolk in East Anglia, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has for many generations been a fashionable holiday destination. Likewise well known for being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a substantial income for its fishermen through the centuries.

The town today has a population of approximately eight thousand inhabitants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: The name "Cromer" wasn't quoted in the 1086 Domesday Book, even though it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon townships in the neighborhood, it is most likely that the community recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, considering that it was situated where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now stands. One additional village outlined in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been totally under the sea, approximately 400m north-east of Cromer's pier.

Cromer at one time was situated some distance inland, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was steadily destroyed by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained across the years mostly by the activities of its fishermen, an industry which flourished up until the nineteen sixties when fish stocks declined. Besides lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The commonly perilous conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were mainly crewed by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to replace man-powered boats.

Tourism started out in Cromer early in the 1800s, and the town was acknowledged for the pure air and healthy bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later turned into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived in Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, driving increasing numbers of people to the town and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An extra station connecting it to the East Midlands opened about ten years later.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the 14th century, though it was remodelled during the 19th century and now has the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
