The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Discovered on the north coast of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has for many years been a fashionable holiday destination. Equally known as a fishing town, Cromer is famed for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a significant income for its fishermen since early days.

Cromer nowadays has a population of roughly 8,000 inhabitants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, despite the fact that it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon townships in the area, it is conceivable that the settlement noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, as it stood where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. A further settlement listed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been entirely under the sea, about 400 metres from Cromer Pier.

Cromer originally stood some way inland, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

Cromer has sustained financially over the centuries mostly through the competence of its fishing fleet, an industry that flourished up until the nineteen sixties as fish stocks declined. Besides the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town were being kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The oftentimes hazardous sea conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were normally crewed by local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, making it possible for lifeboats powered by motor to replace rowed boats.

Tourism started in the town in the early 19th century, and the town was recognized for its clean air and beneficial bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later transformed into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The train was connected to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, bringing increasing numbers of visitors to the town and establishing it as a holiday destination. A 2nd rail station connecting it to the East Midlands opened roughly 10 years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul has its origin in the 14th C, although it was remodelled in the 19thC and today has got the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
