Cromer Norfolk: Standing on the northern coastline of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has for many years been a favorite vacation spot. Furthermore known for being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a significant source of income for its local fishermen for many centuries.

The town currently has a population of just below eight thousand occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historic Past: The name "Cromer" was not registered in the Domesday Book of 1086, even though there certainly would have been Saxon settlements in the area, it is certainly likely that the settlement noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, because it stood where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now stands. A different village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been completely covered by the sea, roughly four hundred meters to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time stood some distance inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was steadily eradicated by the ocean in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has endured financially throughout the years by and large due to the activities of its fishermen, an industry that did well up until the 60's at which time stocks of fish went into decline. Besides lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the local fishermen were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The all too often unsafe conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were routinely operated by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously man-powered boats.

Tourism developed in the town early in the nineteenth century, and it was recognized for its pure air and health giving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later changed into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway found its way to the town in the 1870s, delivering lots more tourists to the town and establishing it as a holiday destination. An additional railway station connecting it to the East Midlands opened up roughly a decade after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th C, though it was rebuilt in the 1800s and today boasts the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 feet).
