The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Standing on the north coast of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has for many years been a popular holiday spot. Furthermore reputable for being a fishing town, Cromer is notable for its crabs and lobsters, providing a significant source of income for its local fishermen for many centuries.

The town nowadays has a population of just under 8,000 occupants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book, however it is evident that there were Anglo Saxon townships in the region, it is conceivable that the settlement registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, as it was positioned where the parish church now stands. An additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days totally under the sea, about four hundred meters to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer long ago stood from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was gradually over time wiped out by the sea in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

Cromer has endured across the centuries by and large through the activity of its fishing fleet, a business which did well up to the nineteen sixties when the numbers of fish went into decline. Besides the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet had been engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The all too often treacherous sea conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were essentially crewed by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed craft.

The holiday business started off in the town in the first half of the 19th century, and it was celebrated for its pure air and health giving bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to Cromer in the 1870s, driving more and more visitors to the area and establishing it as a holiday destination. Another station to the East Midlands was opened approximately 10 years after this.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church was first built in the 14th century, and it was reconstructed in the 1800s and at this time has the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 feet).
