The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Sitting on the north coastline of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has been a well loved holiday destination since the nineteenth century. Also respected as being a fishing town, Cromer is notable for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a leading source of income for the local fishermen since early times.

Cromer currently has a population of around 8,000 occupants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is odd that the name "Cromer" was not listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, nonetheless there were certainly Saxon communites in the region, it is probable that the settlement mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, because it sat where the St Peter and Saint Paul parish church now stands. An additional settlement identified in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been completely swallowed by the ocean, approximately 400 metres to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself at one time sat some way inland, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was eventually eradicated by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived over the years mostly due to the activity of its fishermen, a business which did well until the 1960's as stocks of fish declined. Apart from lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen had been engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The generally unsafe conditions off the coast of Norfolk, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were mostly operated by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism started in Cromer early in the 1800s, and the town was famed for the pure air and health giving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived in Cromer in the 1870s, bringing an ever-increasing number of people to the town and establishing it as a holiday destination. A 2nd station to the East Midlands opened up around ten years after this.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the fourteenth century, although it was rebuilt during the 19thC and now has got the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
