Cromer in Norfolk: Located on the north coastline of Norfolk county in East of England, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has for many years been a favoured holiday destination. Furthermore known as being a fishing town, Cromer is renowned for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a significant income for its fishermen since early times.

The town at this time has a populace of about 8,000 residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: The name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, even though there certainly would have been Saxon communites in the neighborhood, it is likely that the village listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, considering that it stood where the parish church now lies. Yet another village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now entirely covered by the sea, approximately 400m to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer at one time stood some distance inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was gradually over time destroyed by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

The town has managed financially over the years mainly due to the activity of its fishermen, a business that prospered up until the 1960's as the numbers of fish diminished. Besides the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen had been engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The all too often severe conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were for the most part manned by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously man-powered lifeboats.

The tourism industry started out in Cromer early in the 19th century, and the town was renowned for the clean air and healthy bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to the town in 1877, bringing increasing amounts of travellers to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An additional railway station to the East Midlands was opened about a decade later.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul originates from the 14th C, although was reconstructed in the 19th century and presently has got the highest church tower in the county (160 feet).
