Cromer in Norfolk: Sitting on the northern coast of the county of Norfolk in East Anglia, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has long been a favourite holiday destination. Additionally renowned as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a vital income for its local fishermen for many centuries.

The town today has a population of about 7,700 inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is weird that the name "Cromer" was not registered in the Domesday Book (1086), despite the fact that there were certainly Anglo Saxon communes around the area, it is conceivable that the community registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, since it was situated where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now stands. An additional village recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely under the sea, roughly 400m north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer once upon a time sat some distance inland, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time eradicated by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has endured over the years primarily by the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry which flourished up to the 1960's at which time stocks of fish went into decline. Apart from lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The all too often hazardous conditions off Norfolk's coast, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were predominantly crewed by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, which permitted lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously man-powered craft.

Tourism started out in the town in the first half of the 1800s, and it was famed for the pure air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway was connected to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, bringing increasing numbers of people to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. Another train station joining it to the East Midlands opened up about 10 years after this.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church originally dates from the 14th C, but was remodelled in the Nineteenth century and today has the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 foot).
