The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Standing on the northern coastline of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has been a favourite holiday spot ever since the nineteenth century. Likewise respected as a fishing town, Cromer is notable for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a substantial income for the fishermen over the centuries.

Cromer today has a population of just below eight thousand inhabitants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is odd that the name "Cromer" wasn't recorded in the Domesday Book (1086), even though there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon encampments around the area, it is conceivable that the community noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, since it stood where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A further village posted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been completely under the sea, approximately four hundred meters from Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself originally stood some distance from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was little by little demolished by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived across the decades principally through the talent of its fishing fleet, an industry that thrived until the 60's when fish numbers went into decline. In addition to the lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the local fishermen had been engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The often risky sea conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were mostly crewed by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to take over from rowed vessels.

Tourism started out in the town in the early 19th century, and the town was acknowledged for its pure air and restorative sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway came to the town in eighteen seventy seven, carrying more and more travellers to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An additional station linking it to the East Midlands opened approximately ten years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul has its origin in the 14th century, though it was reconstructed during the 1800s and at this time has the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
