The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Discovered on the northern coast of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has been a well known vacation destination ever since the nineteenth century. Equally known as being a fishing town, Cromer is world famous for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a substantial income source for the fishermen since early days.

Cromer these days has a population of just below eight thousand residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Story of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not registered in the Domesday Book of 1086, even though there certainly would have been Saxon communites around the area, it is conceivable that the village registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, given it sat where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now stands. A different settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now entirely under the sea, approximately 400 meters from Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself at one time stood some distance inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was eventually eradicated by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has endured financially through the years for the most part by the activities of its fishermen, an industry which did well up to the nineteen sixties when the numbers of fish dropped. In addition to the lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were being engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The often treacherous conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were typically operated by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered craft.

Tourism started off in the town in the first half of the 19th century, and the town was renowned for its clean air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system found its way to Cromer in 1877, delivering increasing amounts of people to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An extra railway station linking it to the East Midlands was opened approximately 10 years later.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th Cent, although it was rebuilt in the 1800s and at this time has the tallest church tower in the county (160 foot).
