The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Situated on the north sea coast of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has been a celebrated holiday destination ever since the 1800s. Furthermore respected as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a substantial income source for the local fishermen for many generations.

The town presently has a population of just under eight thousand residents and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is peculiar that the name "Cromer" was not listed in the Domesday Book (1086), though there were certainly Saxon settlements in the region, it is quite possible that the community recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, as it stood where the parish church now stands. A different settlement recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been entirely covered by the sea, around 400 metres from Cromer's pier.

Cromer originally was positioned some distance inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was progressively destroyed by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

The town has survived financially across the centuries by and large by the prowess of its fishermen, a business which prospered up until the 60's as the numbers of fish went into decline. As well as lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were being occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The normally life-threatening conditions off Norfolk's coast, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were essentially manned by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously man-powered craft.

Tourism started out in the town in the early 19th century, and it was renowned for its pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway found its way to the town in 1877, delivering growing numbers of travellers to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An extra station joining it to the East Midlands opened up about a decade after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th Cent, although was rebuilt in the 19th century and at present has the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
