The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Discovered on the north sea coast of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has been a favorite holiday spot ever since the nineteenth century. Furthermore well known as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a vital income source for its local fishermen for many generations.

The town presently has a population of just below 8,000 inhabitants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not recognized in the Domesday Book of 1086, despite the fact that it is accepted that there were Anglo Saxon townships in the neighborhood, it is certainly likely that the community recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, considering that it stood where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. One additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today entirely covered by the sea, about 400 metres to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer originally stood from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was eventually wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

Cromer has managed financially throughout the years largely by the ability of its fishing fleet, an industry which did well up until the 1960's when the numbers of fish went into decline. In addition to lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The commonly dangerous conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were essentially manned by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to replace rowed vessels.

The tourist industry started in Cromer in the first half of the nineteenth century, and it was recognized for its clean air and health improving sea bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The train found its way to Cromer in 1877, bringing an increasing number of people to the town and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An alternate train station to the East Midlands opened up approximately 10 years later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th century, although it was reconstructed in the 1800s and at present has got the highest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
