Cromer in Norfolk: Set on the north coastline of Norfolk county in Eastern England, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has for many decades been a favoured vacation spot. Likewise respected for being a fishing town, Cromer is celebrated for its lobsters and crabs, which have been an important income source for the local fishermen through the decades.

Cromer today has a population of just under eight thousand inhabitants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, despite the fact that it is incontestable that there were Saxon settlements around the area, it is very likely that the settlement registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, as it stood where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. Yet another settlement shown in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been totally swallowed by the sea, roughly four hundred metres from the pier.

Cromer itself originally stood some way inland, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was little by little wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has managed through the generations for the most part through the activity of its fishermen, a business which thrived up until the 1960's when the numbers of fish dropped. In addition to the lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The normally treacherous sea conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were normally crewed by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for lifeboats powered by motor to take over from man-powered vessels.

Tourism started off in the town in the first half of the 19th century, and it was renowned for the pure air and health giving bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line came to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, delivering more and more travellers to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. A second station to the East Midlands was unveiled around a decade after this.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul was first built in the 14th century, but was remodelled during the 19thC and now has got the highest church tower in the county (160 foot).
