The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Set on the north sea coast of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has been a well known vacation spot since the 19th century. Additionally respected for being a fishing town, Cromer is renowned for its lobsters and crabs, providing a significant source of income for the local fishermen for many hundreds of years.

The town at present has a population of just under eight thousand occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is weird that the name "Cromer" was not quoted in the Domesday Book of 1086, however it is unquestionable that there were Anglo Saxon encampments in the neighborhood, it is possible that the village mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, because it was situated where the parish church now stands. One additional settlement posted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been entirely covered by the sea, around four hundred meters to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself at one time was situated some way from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was progressively wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived economically over the generations largely through the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry that prospered up to the nineteen sixties when stocks of fish went into decline. In addition to the the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishing fleet were being engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically hazardous sea conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were for the most part manned by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, allowing motor powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered boats.

Tourism started in Cromer early in the 19th century, and the town was renowned for its clean air and health giving sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The train was connected to Cromer in the 1870s, delivering increasing numbers of tourists to the town and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. A 2nd station to the East Midlands opened around ten years later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church first dates from the fourteenth century, although it was reconstructed in the 19th century and now has the tallest church tower in the county (160 feet).
