Cromer in Norfolk: Sitting on the north coastline of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has for many years been a favourite holiday destination. Likewise respected as a fishing town, Cromer is notable for its crabs and lobsters, providing a vital income source for its fishermen since early times.

The town at present has a population of just below eight thousand inhabitants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is unusual that the name "Cromer" wasn't documented in the Domesday Book (1086), although it is likely that there were Anglo Saxon communes in the region, it is plausible that the community listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, given it was positioned where the parish church now lies. Yet another village shown in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely under the sea, about 400m to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer long ago was positioned inland, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was little by little destroyed by the sea in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived over the decades predominantly due to the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry that prospered until the 60's when fish numbers went into decline. Besides lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the town's fishing fleet had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The typically severe sea conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were most often crewed by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed boats.

Tourism started off in the town in the first half of the nineteenth century, and the town was famed for the clean air and health giving sea bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line came to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, driving growing numbers of visitors to the town and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. A 2nd station joining it to the East Midlands opened roughly ten years after this.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the fourteenth century, but was rebuilt in the 1800s and today has the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
