The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is weird that the name "Cromer" was not identified in the Domesday Book (1086), though it is accepted that there were Anglo Saxon encampments in the neighborhood, it is probable that the settlement identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, because it sat where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now lies. Cromer long ago stood inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was steadily eradicated by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived throughout the centuries predominantly through the activities of its fishermen, an industry that flourished until the 60's as the numbers of fish dropped. Apart from lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the local fishermen were engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The frequently hazardous sea conditions off the coast of Norfolk, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were frequently operated by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, making it possible for powered lifeboats to replace man-powered lifeboats.

The holiday industry developed in the town in the first half of the nineteenth century, and it was recognized for its pure air and health giving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later remodelled as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived at Cromer in 1877, driving lots more visitors to the town and establishing it as a holiday destination. Another station connecting it to the East Midlands opened up about ten years later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th century, and it was rebuilt during the 19th century and now has got the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
