Cromer in Norfolk: Found on the north coast of Norfolk county in Eastern England, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has been a celebrated holiday destination ever since the nineteenth century. Likewise recognized for being a fishing town, Cromer is world famous for its lobsters and crabs, providing a leading income source for its fishermen for many hundreds of years.

Cromer nowadays has a populace of just below eight thousand occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is weird that the name "Cromer" was not documented in the Domesday Book (1086), despite the fact that there were certainly Anglo Saxon communites in the neighborhood, it is quite possible that the settlement registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, since it was located where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now stands. A further village shown in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely swallowed by the sea, about 400 metres north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself long ago stood some distance inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was slowly wiped out by the ocean during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

The town has sustained over the centuries mostly by the activities of its fishing fleet, a business that flourished until the 1960's at which time stocks of fish declined. As well as the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The often unsafe sea conditions off Norfolk's coastline, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were oftentimes operated by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism started out in Cromer in the first half of the 1800s, and it was celebrated for its clean air and beneficial bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later transformed into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived in Cromer in 1877, drawing growing numbers of visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. Another train station joining it to the East Midlands was unveiled about 10 years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul has its origin in the 14th century, though it was reconstructed in the 19th century and today has got the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
