The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Sitting on the north coast of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a well known holiday destination since the 19th century. Furthermore recognized as being a fishing town, Cromer is world famous for its crabs and lobsters, which have been an essential source of income for the fishermen since early days.

Cromer at this time has a population of approximately eight thousand residents and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is strange that the name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086), though it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon communes around the area, it is feasible that the village documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, because it was situated where the parish church now stands. Yet another settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been entirely swallowed by the ocean, roughly 400 meters from Cromer's pier.

Cromer originally was situated from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was slowly destroyed by the ocean during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

The town has survived across the generations principally due to the activities of its fishermen, an industry that thrived up until the 1960's as the numbers of fish declined. As well as the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The regularly risky sea conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, led to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were routinely operated by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously man-powered lifeboats.

The holiday industry started off in Cromer early in the 1800s, and the town was celebrated for the pure air and beneficial bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived in the town in the 1870s, bringing more and more visitors to the town and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. The second station to the East Midlands opened around 10 years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul originates from the 14th century, although it was reconstructed during the 19th century and at present boasts the highest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
