Cromer in Norfolk: Situated on the north sea coast of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has long been a fashionable vacation destination. Additionally renowned as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a significant source of income for its local fishermen since early days.

The town today has a population of just below eight thousand residents and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historical Past: The name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, though there were certainly Saxon communes in the region, it is possible that the community recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, because it sat where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now stands. A different settlement registered in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been totally under the sea, about four hundred meters from Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time sat some way inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was steadily eradicated by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived financially over the decades largely through the prowess of its fishermen, a business which thrived up to the nineteen sixties at which time fish stocks went into decline. Aside from lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The frequently dangerous conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were oftentimes operated by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed lifeboats.

The holiday industry started off in Cromer early in the 1800s, and it was recognized for its pure air and restorative bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway found its way to the town in eighteen seventy seven, bringing an ever-increasing number of tourists to the town and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An alternate station linking it to the East Midlands opened up around a decade after this.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church first dates from the fourteenth century, and it was remodelled during the Nineteenth century and at this time boasts the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
