The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't quoted in the Domesday Book (1086), nonetheless there were certainly Saxon communites around the area, it is plausible that the village listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, given it was positioned where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A second village outlined in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today entirely swallowed by the ocean, roughly four hundred metres north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer long ago sat some distance from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was gradually demolished by the sea during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived across the ages primarily through the expertise of its fishing fleet, a business that thrived up until the nineteen sixties at which time fish numbers declined. Besides lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were being occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The regularly treacherous sea conditions off the coast of Norfolk, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were for the most part manned by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for lifeboats powered by motor to replace man-powered vessels.

Tourism started off in the town in the first half of the nineteenth century, and the town was recognized for the clean air and restorative sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was changed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system was connected to the town in the 1870s, bringing more and more people to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A second station to the East Midlands was opened roughly 10 years later.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church originally dates from the 14th C, although it was rebuilt during the 1800s and now has the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
