The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Lying on the northern coastline of Norfolk in East Anglia, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has long been a fashionable holiday spot. Likewise reputable for being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, that have been an essential income for the fishermen over the years.

The town nowadays has a population of just under 8,000 occupants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historic Past: The name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086), however it is not disputed that there were Saxon communites in the area, it is certainly likely that the community identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, as it stood where the parish church now lies. One additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been entirely under the sea, roughly 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer originally was positioned some way from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was slowly demolished by the ocean in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained financially across the generations largely due to the prowess of its fishermen, an industry which thrived until the 60's as stocks of fish went into decline. As well as lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The normally severe conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, led to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were predominantly operated by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed vessels.

The tourism industry started in the town in the early nineteenth century, and it was acknowledged for its pure air and health giving bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen seventy seven, driving lots more tourists to the town and establishing it as a holiday destination. A second station to the East Midlands was unveiled around ten years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul was first built in the 14th C, and it was remodelled during the 19thC and today has the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 foot).
